Saving energy and enhancing reliability of the water supply in Ithaca, NY

Every Challenge Has a Backstory

The City of Ithaca, NY determined a need to implement a major water supply project that would replace a 100-year-old water treatment plant—which was beyond its useful life and challenged by Safe Drinking Water Act requirements—with a new plant and upgraded treatment process to provide greater protection against waterborne pathogens. The project also would allow the city to continue providing reliable water to more than 35,000 citizens in the area, while saving energy.

As long-term energy conservation is a primary goal of the environmentally-conscious community, OBG was the ideal team to address the community’s water and energy goals.

OBG’s Focus on Solutions

OBG completed several studies, examining factors such as greenhouse gases and ecological considerations, and engaged the community to arrive at the best course of action for the water system. OBG designed the new water treatment plant using advanced membrane technology and integrated modern control systems. The project also included dredging the city’s reservoir to restore lost capacity; constructing a new dewatering facility to reduce the volume of wastes; and implementing dam safety upgrades.

Results that Matter

The new water treatment plant uses modern filtration technology to save energy, while ensuring a safe and reliable water supply for the region. The facility is designed with U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) practices to achieve efficient energy consumption and an optimized work environment.
