Kokosing-OBG awarded $55M contract to continue dredging of Indiana Harbor and CanalOBG News,
OBG, in a joint venture (JV) with Kokosing Industrial (Kokosing), has been awarded a $55 million contract from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Chicago District for continued operation of a confined disposal facility (CDF) and maintenance dredging of the Indiana Harbor and Canal in East Chicago, Indiana. The dredging is part of an ongoing effort to deepen the area’s polluted channels to restore the harbor and canal to navigable depths. The terms of the contract include one base year and four options years.
The JV is currently completing a previous $60 million, five-year contract for the project, under which the companies have removed 1 million cubic yards of sediment from the harbor and canal, reducing the amount of contaminants that have been flowing into Lake Michigan and allowing for more efficient commercial navigation. The maintenance dredging aims to remove an additional 600,000 cubic yards of sediment.
OBG will continue serving the JV contract from multiple offices across the Metro, Midwest, and Northeast regions. The overall project involves operation of the CDF and a groundwater collection and treatment plant on a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) site. The harbor was not dredged from 1972 to 2012 due to contaminated sediment and lack of a suitable storage place for it. That dredged sediment is now permanently stored at the CDF, in addition to on-site soil and groundwater contamination in compliance with RCRA requirements.
Specifically, OBG designed, built, and operates the wastewater treatment plant for the CDF. OBG also conducts various operations and maintenance services (i.e., facility maintenance and groundwater gradient control and stormwater control for the site) and developed and operates an innovative air monitoring program with real-time reporting of air quality data through a public website. Kokosing is responsible for the dredging and sediment services required for the contract.
Work under the new contract is expected to start on April 1, 2017.
