Target Hill Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements

The Target Hill Wastewater Treatment Plant was, at times, unable to meet the effluent limitations for biological oxygen demand and total suspended solids. O’Brien & Gere investigated causes for treatment process upsets and made recommendations for stabilizing the treatment processes and reduction of wastewater volume. A pilot project was conducted to stabilize the activated sludge treatment process. Results of the pilot were utilized to model the process system and provide alternatives for improvements to the process system. In order to address wastewater effluent permit requirements, improvements were suggested for the secondary clarification system and an additional secondary clarifier was recommended and designed. A topographic survey and geotechnical investigation were performed at the clarifier construction site and used to design the structure. Electrical improvements and site improvements were designed to accommodate the proposed clarifier, existing utilities and neighboring athletic facilities. O’Brien & Gere also performed improvements to four anaerobic sludge digester tanks which were not functioning due to mechanical failures, necessary to restore the digestion process.
